Effective July 1, 2014,  Senate Bill 13-1111 18-6.5-108 requires that certain person’s, paid or unpaid, must “report such abuse to a law enforcement agency not more than 24 hours after making the observation or discovery”.

Such individuals include physicians, surgeons, therapists, medical examiners, nurses, hospital and long-term care faculty, chiropractors, mental health professions, social workers, clergy members, dentists, pharmacists, along with others.

The law comes after Colorado Adult Protective Services responded to 11,539 reports of suspected elderly abuse in 2013. Colorado is the 48th state to require reporting of suspected elder abuse, according to the Department of Human Services.
